With Creative North hiding in a cubicle until Begbie’s drunk himself cold, we’ve been Zooming our wonderful speakers finding out what they were planning to share on stage at the Royal Exchange at CN2020.
You’ll find all the Zoom chats over on our Youtube channel from Friday 19th June.
Here we had a brief catch up with Glenn Fisher, copywriter, author of Art of the Click, founder of the AllGoodCopy podcast, public speaker and all round top geezer. He’s also a big fan of collaboration and was due to host the panel at Creative North 2020.
“Collaboration runs through everything you do. And it should be that way.” he says,
“Very early on in my career I was lucky enough to clock that and realise that for all the ideas and talent I might have I couldn’t express the things I wanted to do without other people and without their input.”
All Good Collaboration
It’s a mixed media world and one way that Glenn’s built his profile and client base has been through his AllGoodCopy podcast.
A super smart move to get out there and interview the biggest and best names in the copywriting and creative industry. A brave move too, as Glenn’s the first to admit he’s not particularly comfortable with the tech.
“Yes I write copy and can talk to people but the technical side of things, God knows how I’ve got away with that, I could do with some more collaboration on that.”
It’s a confession that touches on a recurring theme throughout the conversations, each speaker advising that while it’s essential to play to your strengths it’s also wise to at least appreciate and ideally develop complementary skills that will support what you’re best at.
A couple of examples:
In Nadya’s case the importance of SEO, handling numbers and growth strategies.
In Daniel’s the need to be more upfront.
In Rory’s case how important it is to look at business as well as creative problem solving.
Glenn’s being bold and tenacious enough to get his head around AV kit.
Not only does it make you more useful to yourself, it makes you more useful to others. A better collaborator. Doors open. Opportunities knock. And more creative collaborative opportunities become possible.
Good work team.
A Parting Piece of Advice
“Don’t be a dick.“
“It’s a skill to overcome that desire to get something out of everything and be able to say, ‘do you know what, I’m going to get involved in this see where it goes and hope I can get something out of it.’
Listen to people. Always be giving.
Part of the thing to remember as well is to focus on your strengths but allow everybody else to focus on theirs. Do what you do well, but allow others to do what they do well too.”
Want to see Glenn teasing wonder from the Creative North 2020 panel when we’re back up and running? Or even….. (don’t say this too loud…..)… an AllGoodCopy meets Creative North fringe event…..?
